An American COMPOSER
John David Kenworthy is an American composer who, after a distinguished 30-year career mastering strategic execution as a VP of Marketing and Digitalization in the industrial automation sector, has applied that rigor and cutting-edge vision to his lifelong passion for music. This disciplined approach has culminated in the completion of over 25 serious concert works since his retirement in March 2024.
Kenworthy’s work is characterized by a dynamic synthesis of structural clarity, deep emotional resonance, and a highly accessible modernism. His concerto writing, in particular, demonstrates a commitment to extended melodicism and a fresh harmonic language that bridges late-Romantic textures with contemporary sophistication. His aesthetic has been favorably compared by esteemed musical colleagues to a modern iteration of American masters, evoking the direct, clear-lined open-chord voicings of Aaron Copland and the lyrical intensity of Samuel Barber.
Though a newly emergent voice, his work is rapidly gaining performance traction. Of particular note was the respectful premiere of his Meditations No. 1 in A Minor, op. 16, “Ma Chanson d'Aujourd'hui” in the childhood home of composer Aram Khatchaturian in Yerevan, Armenia on October 10, 2025 – an experience that directly informed the development of the much-anticipated Concerto No. 1 in Bb Minor, op. 24, “An Evening in Yerevan” for orchestra.
Further performances of his various works are scheduled across the U.S. and online through 2026. Kenworthy’s dedication to the musical community is further demonstrated through his ongoing LinkedIn digital series, which provides analytical, educational, and often humorous content on classical music six times a week.
